Syllabus of IELTS

Writing Section

This evaluates the writing skills of the candidate. It has two questions in both formats which differ by module. The total duration of this section is 60 minutes.

• Task 1: In IELTS Academic, the candidate has to write a pictorial representation (graph, picture, and chart) in 20 minutes of about 150 words. On the other hand, in IELTS General Training, you will have to write a letter explaining a situation. It can be formal, informal, or semi-formal. The time and word limit is the same for both.
• Task 2: Here you have to write your viewpoint or opinion on the general topics in about 250 words on the general topic. It is for those who are taking IELTS Academic. Also, the response has to be formal. Although the second task of IELTS General is the same as Academic but the response must be in personal style.

Reading Section

As the name says, it evaluates the reading skills of the candidates. It contains three texts of general interest. Here the candidate has to attempt 40 questions in an hour. It is also different for both the modules just like the writing section.

• In IELTS Academic, there can be three long texts anything from descriptive, factual, discursive to analytical. It can also contain non-verbal material like graphs, illustrations and diagrams. The given paragraphs are sourced from textbooks, magazines, newspapers, and journals. Also, the passages are taken from a non-specialist audience.

• The IELTS General consists of three different sections in which the passages are taken from the daily things that you might come across like the notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines. Section 1 (social survival) contains the one-two shorter section; the second section is workplace survival containing two texts. The last section is the general reading section containing a long text.

Listening Section

This section of the language proficiency test is the same for both the modules, unlike the reading and writing sections. It lasts for 30 minutes, but candidates gets an extra 10 minutes to transfer the answers to the respective sheets. The audio has many accents. Also, the recordings will be played only once. The four recordings are:

• Recording 1 is the conversation between two people that is related to the social context.
• Recording 2 is a monologue speech on everyday needs topics like speech about local facilities.
• Recording 3 is a conversation on an educational basis between four people.
• Recording 4 is a monologue speech on academics like a lecture.

Speaking Section

The speaking section is also the same for both modules like the listening section. It lasts for about 11-14 minutes and you will give a face-to-face interview where your speaking skills will be analyzed. It contains three parts that are as follows:

Part 1 (Introduction and Interview)

In this part, you will asked to introduce yourself by the examiner and the follow-up questions will be asked about your hobbies, families, studies and work. It will last for 4 to 5 minutes which communication, word usage, and sentence structure will be evaluated.

Part 2 (Long turn)

Here you will given a cue card, then you will be asked to talk about a particular topic. It will last for 3-4 minutes where 1 minute will be your preparation time. Pen and paper will be provided for note-taking. You will explain the do's and don'ts. Your skills in organizing ideas will be evaluated here.

Part 3 (Discussion)

In the section, you will be asked the questions from the section two. You will get the chance to discuss the remaining pointers that were not covered in section two.
